Windows 10 Support Ends Soon: How to Prepare Your Device Fleet for Windows 11

In just a few months, Windows 10 will no longer be supported. Its successor, Windows 11, brings tougher security and fresh new features such as AI-powered Copilot, Smart App Control, better multitasking tools, built-in accessibility, and much more. This short guide is intended to help you make headway with a seamless OS transition.

Whether you already have one foot in the door with Windows 11 or have yet to take the first steps, this guide will help you make headway on a seamless OS transition. You’ll learn why now is the time to act, discover features and benefits of Windows 11, gain actionable tips for your migration, and uncover intriguing service options to help you put the win in Windows.

Why Upgrade to Windows 11?

Trafera’s Senior Systems Consultant, Jon Anderson, knows a thing or two about implementing Windows 11 effectively. He has worked with dozens of public sector organizations and conducted numerous trainings on the topic.

“The main reason [to move to Windows 11] is simple — Windows 10 is reaching the end of its servicing period,” Anderson said in a recent webinar with Trafera.

What happens when a device reaches the end of its service period? When devices are no longer being serviced, it means the manufacturer has stopped providing software/driver updates and security patches to that hardware. This leaves out-of-service devices vulnerable, creating cracks in your organization’s defensive fortress against cyber threats.

But it’s not just about escaping vulnerabilities. There are numerous features and tools for users to enjoy with Windows 11.

“Beyond that,” he continued, “Windows 11 offers improved tools and features, specifically in security and compatibility with the latest apps and hardware.”

Windows 11 offers a slew of updates that improve the user experience:

  • AI-Powered Copilot: Integrated directly into Windows 11, Copilot boosts productivity and simplifies workflows across apps like Microsoft 365.
  • Enhanced Security Features: Windows 11 features Smart App Control and hardware-based protections that help safeguard devices from security threats.
  • Improved File Explorer: Users get an easier and more intuitive experience navigating files with new tabs and customizable views within File Explorer
  • Better Multitasking Tools: Snap Layouts and Virtual Desktops on Windows 11 help users stay organized and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Built-in Accessibility Options: Features like Voice Access, touch navigation, and digital pen support offer additional accessibility across the Windows 11 operating system.

Taking Stock Of Your Windows Environment

Like any good technology initiative, a transition to Windows 11 should start with an audit of your current Windows environment. “A map won’t help you if you don’t know where you are,” as the saying goes. In this stage, you are building your understanding of how compatible your current system (both hardware and software) is with the Windows 11 operating system.

Windows 11 Technical Requirements and Compatibility:

Processors - Intel 8th Gen processor (or newer) or an AMD Ryzen 2000 series (or newer).

TPM Version 2.0 - TPM 2.0 support required. May be able to upgrade devices with TPM 1.2 manually through BIOS settings.

UEFI Firmware with Secure Boot - Secure Boot must be enabled

Take Inventory of Your Hardware:

Using your asset management platform, look at all of the Windows devices in your organization.

  • Which devices meet the hardware requirements for Windows 11?*
  • What’s the condition of incompatible devices - are they worth upgrading, or is replacement the better option?

Checking Software Compatibility:

In addition to auditing your hardware, take a look at your organization’s software. Will your most vital tools run on Windows 11?

Review your tech stack–particularly locally run applications–to ensure each tool is compatible with the new operating system. You can use tools like the PC Health Check app to make the process easier.

How to Upgrade to Windows 11

Once you’ve assessed your fleet and planned your upgrade, it’s time to move forward with the transition. The good news is there are several ways to upgrade to Windows 11, and most methods make the process relatively simple with minimal disruption.

Here are some ways to manage the upgrade process:

Windows Update for Business

This is the simplest solution for many organizations. Windows Update for Business takes care of the heavy lifting. Devices download and install the update quietly in the background, with users only needing to restart when prompted. The entire process should take no more than about 30 minutes, and the only noticeable interruption is a quick reboot at the end.

Configuration Manager / WSUS

Another option for organizations managing large fleets, Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr) and Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) help simplify the upgrade process. WSUS distributes updates across your network, while ConfigMgr gives you more control over how and when those updates roll out. Some organizations use one or the other, but combining them allows IT teams to schedule deployments, target specific devices, and track progress more effectively. Here’s how combining the two works:

1. Make sure WSUS is set up and ready to go

  • WSUS needs to be installed and configured so it can sync Windows 11 upgrade packages.
  • In ConfigMgr, check that updates are properly pulling in from WSUS.

2. Deploy Windows 11 to your devices

  • Use ConfigMgr’s Software Update Management (SUM) to send out the upgrade.
  • Set up deployment rings to phase things out instead of upgrading everything at once.

3. Keep an eye on progress and troubleshoot if needed

  • Check ConfigMgr’s reporting tools to track how the upgrade is going.
  • If something isn’t working, reviewing WSUS logs and ConfigMgr status messages can help figure out what’s causing the issue.

Manual Upgrade for Individual Devices

This method works best if you’re only upgrading a small number of devices and prefer a hands-on approach. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

1. Download the Windows 11 setup media from Microsoft.

2. Extract the ISO file and run setup.exe to begin the upgrade.

3. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Automated Upgrade Using Scripts

For organizations managing multiple devices, a scripted upgrade can save a lot of time. All you need to do is deploy the setup file across devices and let automation do the rest. Just follow these steps:

1. Distribute the Windows 11 setup media across your device fleet.

2. Create a script that runs setup.exe with the necessary upgrade parameters.

3. Deploy the script using your preferred management tool to initiate the upgrade automatically.

Troubleshooting Windows 11 Upgrades

If you hit a snag during the process, here are a couple of ways to troubleshoot and get back on track:

  • Check Compatibility Reports in InTune and Azure: These tools can help you identify which devices are facing compatibility issues and what’s holding up the upgrade.
  • Use Microsoft’s SetupDiag Tool: This tool consolidates logs from your device and gives you a clearer picture of what might be causing the problem. SetupDiag’s detailed reporting can guide you to the best solution quickly.

If issues persist, taking a closer look at system logs or consulting with an experienced IT partner may save you time and reduce disruptions.
