How To Recognize AI Scams And Protect Your Tech Environment

AI scams are becoming harder to spot as fake voices, emails, and videos grow more convincing. Learn how to identify AI-driven scams, train your team to respond safely, and strengthen your organization’s tech security.

How AI Is Changing Scams

Scams have always shifted with technology, and AI is the latest tool pulled into the mix. Unfortunately, it is now easier than ever to use AI for the wrong reasons. Instead of obvious typos or clumsy stories, a lot of what people see in scams today looks and sounds surprisingly normal and believable. So, before we talk about what to watch for, we need to take a look at what is really happening.

Here are some recent findings:

  • The FBI’s 2024 Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) report shows reported internet crime losses reaching $16.6 billion in 2024, a 33% increase from 2023, with business email compromise (BEC) among the most costly categories.
  • VIPRE’s Q2 2024 Email Threat Trends Report found that 49% of detected spam emails were BEC scams, and 40% of those BEC emails were generated with AI tools.
  • A 2025 survey found that most adults couldn’t differentiate between authentic and AI phishing emails. Of 18,000 employed adults, commissioned by Yubico, found that when people were shown an AI-generated phishing email, only 46% recognized it as phishing. The other 54% either thought it was a genuine human-written message or were unsure.
  • Yubico’s Global State of Authentication survey found that 62% of Gen Z workers had interacted with phishing content over the past year, and many respondents reported receiving no cybersecurity training at all.

Now, all of this points to a few patterns:

  1. AI is helping scammers send messages that feel personal and targeted, not like generic spam.
  2. The classic red flags we used to rely on, like spelling errors or awkward wording, are showing up less often. A lot of scam messages now look clean and professional.
  3. People are less sure about what to trust online, and many feel more confident in their ability to spot scams than they probably should, which creates space for scammers to slip through.

That combination of more convincing content and less certainty is a big part of how AI-enabled scams work as well as they do, and why it's more important than ever that training and safeguards are put in place and kept up.

1. Voice Cloning And Imposter Calls

Scammers do not always need a long phone call to copy someone’s voice. A short clip from social media, a webinar, or a voicemail can be enough to build a convincing sound-alike. That voice then gets used in “emergency” calls or in situations where someone pretends to be a leader asking for quick help.

What this might look like:

  • A panicked “family member” asking you to send money right away.
  • Someone who sounds like a supervisor or executive asking you to handle a sensitive payment and not loop anyone else in.
  • A caller claiming to be from your bank or IT team, insisting they need information immediately to “fix” an issue.

The simplest protection is a clear rule everyone knows: no financial or sensitive action happens based on a phone call alone. If something feels off, staff should hang up and call back using a trusted number from your directory, ticketing system, or vendor file, even if the voice sounds familiar.

Behind the scenes, AI-based call and identity tools can help too, by checking call patterns, locations, and behavior for things that do not match normal activity. But those tools work best when the people answering calls already feel empowered to pause and verify.

2. AI-Generated Phishing And Business Email Compromise

In the past, phishing attempts often looked clunky, with obvious errors or easy-to-spot inconsistencies. Now, many of these messages read like normal business communication and can even sound like they came from someone inside your organization.

3. Deepfake Video, Online Meetings, And Visual Impersonation

Deepfake tools can create or alter videos so that a “vendor,” “partner,” or “colleague” appears on screen asking for access, files, or sensitive information.

When something feels off in a call, it helps to slow down and ask:

  • Was this meeting expected and scheduled through normal channels?
  • Is this person asking for access, approvals, or data they usually wouldn’t ask for?

4. Fake AI Tools, Investment Schemes, And “Too Good To Be True” Offers

Any time technology gets buzz, scammers will naturally attach themselves to it. Right now, “AI” appears on everything from investment pitches to browser extensions, and not all of it is legitimate. Some tools are built mainly to harvest credentials, collect data, or push people toward risky financial decisions.

Instead of trying to memorize every scam, give people a quick gut-check:

  • Do you know who is behind this tool or service, and can you find real contact information?
  • Is the privacy policy clear about how data is stored and used?
  • Is it asking for more access than it reasonably needs?
  • Is there pressure to move fast or pay in unusual ways, like cryptocurrency or gift cards?

On the organizational side, set a clear expectation that new AI tools should not be connected to work accounts without IT review. That alone can reduce a lot of exposure

A Simple AI Scam Safety Checklist For Any Team

Here is a framework you can adapt into handouts, intranet content, or onboarding. It may be simple, but consistency and success comes from repeating it in training, tabletop exercises, and everyday reminders.

  1. Pause
    • Does Dois message or call feel urgent, emotional, or secretive?
    • Does it involve money, credentials, or sensitive data?
  2. Inspect
    • Look closely at sender details, links, and attachments.
    • Ask yourself if the tone and request fit past communication from this person or organization.
  3. Verify
    • Use a trusted channel. Open the official website directly, start a fresh email to a known address, or call a known phone number.
    • For payments and access requests, follow your documented approval process.
  4. Escalate
    • Forward suspicious content to IT or your security contact instead of deleting it.
    • Encourage a “better safe than sorry” culture where reporting is appreciated.
  5. Protect
    • Turn on multi-factor authentication wherever possible.
    • Keep devices, browsers, and apps updated.
    • Be careful about sharing voice and video clips publicly, especially for children, executives, or high-profile staff.
